Mahmrityunjaya Mantra
History of Mahmrityunjaya Mantra:
Lord Shiva gave the Mrityunjaya Mantra to Rishi Markandeya. Here is a story… Bhrigu Rishi and his wife Marudmati have been begging Lord Shiva for a son for many years. Lord Shiva was so impressed by their devotion to him that he gave them some important advice: they should either have a short son who is smart but has a short stature or a son with a low IQ but a long life. After Rishi Brighu accepted Lord Shiva’s request to have a short son, Lord Shiva gifted you a son named Markandeya, whose lifespan is only 12 years.
On the other hand, the boy remained focused and wrapped his arms around Shiva’s Spirit and surrendered himself to Lord Shiva’s mercy. Then Hades tried to take his soul, but the boy fell on Shiva Lin, Lord Shiva’s sole protector. Shiva was panicked by the boy, enraged and punished Yama. Markandeya received Shiva’s secret “Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra” for longevity.
Markandeya Rishi and his wife decided not to tell their son the truth. As Markandeya’s 12th birthday approaches, his parents are heartbroken. Marchandya could not understand their pain. The two talked about the whole incident at her request. Then Malkandya began his own penance in the presence of Lord Shiva. Then, on his 12th birthday, Yama, the god of death, came to pick him up. His family prayed but could not.
